Twitter changing sports, fan relationship

Twitter and sports go hand in hand in today’s fast paced and social media storm of a world. During sporting events, there are millions of tweets that are firing off every second, but is it possible that twitter is actually hurting sports?

Peter Roumeliotis, a writer for Sports Illustrated, wrote an article that looked into how social media is affecting the NHL’s fans.  The NHL is looking into ways to expand their market and social media is a great way to do it.  Roumeliotis writes, “This phenomenon isn’t simply called ‘checking your phone while you are watching a game.” It’s known as “Second Screen Consumption.’”

Twitter has been troublesome in the NFL Draft. Mike Florio, writer for Pro Football talk, wrote an on this growing issue. Florio says, “In 2013, the first year ESPN and NFL Network decided not to tip picks, a whopping 85.37 percent of those responding said they don’t want to know the picks in advance.” This, however, does not stop other sources from tweeting out the picks to ruin the experience.

Sometimes athletes forget that any controversial tweet, no matter how old, will be saved and held against them. Cardale Jones, Ohio State Quarterback’s infamous tweet is an example.

However, Twitter allows fans to quickly be up to date. It the first of its kind. A two-way communication path between fans and players. It is also a large-scale forum to interact with other fans, which brings fans closer together.

Twitter has not had enough time to be seen as a positive or negative on sports. Coming up on its tenth birthday, Twitter continues to change the relationship between sports and social media.
